We LOVE this place, but they are frequently closed when their hours say that they are open. It’s a bit out of the way, and there have been many times where we specifically have come here after checking the hours, arrive, and they are closed. We absolutely love the food and the vibes, but find the lack of dependable hours frustrating.
A RP gem, a beachside paradise. Love coming to this place while at the beach. They have hot dogs, French fries, chicken nuggets, and more. They also have ice cream, although definitely would not recommend the mango ice cream because it melts so quickly, but is so good. It’s kid friendly, it is fast, and the lines go quickly.
I've never been disappointed by Blue Jay Cafe's food - and given that I have a gluten intolerance? I will extend extra accolades to them for being accommodating to food allergies when they probably "don't have to be." Because seriously, they're a hot dog stand on a beach. But seriously...they've become a staple of the neighborhood. And they've always been so gracious, understanding, patient, and all-around amazing people to order from. And chat with. And sit by their stand and listen to live music with. They didn't have to be any of those things, either. Because again, they're a hot dog stand on a beach, with a relatively captive audience. But they've continually gone above and beyond to be better than the stereotypical hot dog stand. Including two fryers - one for gluten-based foods, and a dedicated fryer for gluten-free foods. Regardless of what I've ordered from them, or the orders from people I've introduced to them? No one has complained about a single meal they've had from Blue Jay Cafe. If anything, everyone has sung their praises. I hope Blue Jay Cafe remains in Rogers Park for many years to come. Going forward, I'll continue to enjoy my hot dogs on gluten-free buns, and salads topped with gluten-free chicken tenders, while they're open for the summer season.
More food and beverage choices, (some for adults) than you'd expect. Plus, my "Chicago Dog" was delicious! As for atmosphere... you can walk right up from our lovely beach at awesome Loyola Park in the best neighborhood in the city. Support local businesses!
Such a fun little cafe on the beach. The food quality is great plus the staff is sooo kind and friendly. It’s extremely baby, toddler and kid friendly. It does get crowded but what can you expect when they’re so awesome? lol
I’m thrilled this cafe has opened at the beach my family frequents. The service, atmosphere, food and food OPTIONS were great. They had a lot to offer but I really appreciated vegan options for adults and kids. Sweet picnic tables and their pricing is reasonable. I hope they do well and stick around for a long time!
Had an awesome beach meal at Blue Jay Cafe today! Service was so friendly and very quick. The hot dog tasted like summer in the best way and the waffle fries were freshly fried! The drink menu was extensive and unique, I'll need to check it out more thoroughly next time
Waffle fries were perfect. Perfectly crisp, not overly hard, still soft inside. The Chicago dog was good. It was lighter on some of the toppings than other dogs, but it made it much easier to eat and better balanced. At a lot of places I get a jumbo so I can still taste the dog. The lemonade was very good, but probably overly sweet. It was really good once the ice melted a bit.
