Casa Mateo Food Review I visited Casa Mateo when it first opened, and I’ll admit, they had quite a bit to improve on. Now, after giving them another shot, I can confidently say they’ve found their stride in many areas. However, it’s important to note that their barbecue is very different from what most Americans are accustomed to. It’s a smoked meat style that is dry and tough, which might not be for everyone. If that’s not your preference, I’d recommend skipping their barbecue dishes. That said, Casa Mateo truly excels in other parts of the menu. The Arepas de Choclo are a fantastic starter—soft, cheesy, and comforting, earning a 7.4/10. The Empanadas are another excellent choice. They’re flavorful, satisfying, and a great value, scoring a 7.8/10. My personal favorite appetizer is the La Papa Frita (fried potato), which is crispy, perfectly seasoned, and deserves a strong 8.5/10. For mains, the standout for me is the Pollo a la Plancha. It’s juicy, full of flavor, and served in a generous portion—perfect for a hearty meal. I’d rate it an impressive 8.9/10. On the other hand, the Sancocho left a bit to be desired. While the soup’s flavor was spot-on and the vegetables were cooked perfectly, the meat was tough when it should be tender and falling off the bone. For now, I’d give it a 6.0/10, but with some adjustments in the kitchen, it could easily improve. Overall, Casa Mateo has a lot to offer. While their barbecue may cater to a niche audience familiar with a specific Colombian style, their other dishes are flavorful and approachable. I’d recommend giving it a try, with the advice to explore beyond the barbecue and focus on their stronger offerings for the best experience.
CASA MATEO 1st time I had them, it was at a carnival. I was very surprised to find them on Cicero Ave in Cicero Illinois. Hospitality was good. The food was amazing. The ribs were so good.
