See All ReviewsAt Chef Tan, the kitchen channels the unapologetic boldness of Hunan cuisine—fermented heat, fresh chiles, and layered aromatics delivered with notable precision. The Century Egg with Chili & Eggplant is a revelation and a must-order: creamy, pungent yolk and silky eggplant meld into a deeply savory, chili-laced mash that lingers memorably. The Sautéed Sliced Lamb in Hunan Style follows with tender, well-seasoned slices that showcase the kitchen’s deft hand. Elsewhere, the Hunan Style Fried Tilapia is flavorful but lacks the same distinction, while the Stir-Fried Beef with Celery—though tasty—suffers from a less ideal cut. The Sautéed Cauliflower with Pork lands as competent but unremarkable. A meal here underscores both the heights and occasional inconsistencies of a kitchen otherwise committed to vibrant, authentic expression.
Authentic delicious Hunan cuisine! Great serving, cozy atmosphere! All the dishes we tried were extremely good and absolutely delicious! Pork intestines were cooked nicely and had great flavor, fried chicken was crunchy and seasoned perfectly, the sautéed pork was simple but delicious, the river snail was salty and perfect with rice, and the eggplant was super flavorful and refreshing! Overall enjoyed the meal greatly, definitely recommend!
I’ve been a loyal customer of Chef Tan since their soft opening. Even though it’s a bit of a drive, I’m more than happy to come all the way from Baltimore just for a meal here whenever I have the time. You can really taste the "Wok Hei" (breath of the wok) in every dish—it’s authentic and packed with flavor. Their stir-fries are the perfect "rice killers" (so savory and appetizing). Today, the Bullfrog was incredibly fresh, and the fermented rice soup with rice balls (Jiu Niang Yuan Zi) was the perfect sweet finish. I also had my all-time favorite, Hong San Duo (minced pork with tomatoes and peppers), which never disappoints. Highly recommend this spot and will definitely keep coming back!
