I saw Dr Pompa today after my lumpectomy to consider further treatment. She was very friendly, thorough and made me feel so comfortable. A wonderful, compassionate doctor.
Dr. Pompa is truly exceptional. From the moment you walk into her office, she is warm, welcoming, and makes you feel completely at ease. She is incredibly thorough and takes the time to really listen—something that is rare and so appreciated. I’ve seen other hematologists in the past, and Dr. Pompa is by far the best. She never rushes appointments and genuinely cares about understanding the root cause of issues rather than just treating symptoms. I actually look forward to my appointments with her, which says so much. If you’re looking for a hematologist who is knowledgeable, compassionate, and truly invested in your care, I cannot recommend Dr. Pompa highly enough.
I would not recommend the facility or doctor nor will I be returning for services. If I could give 0 stars I would. I had a tumor in my breast where the very center of it contained triple negative cancer, however the outer layers and tissues connecting to such inside my breast was not - they were benign. I went to Dr. Pompa as recommended by my doctor, Renee Armour. Upon entering the facility, I was already uncomfortable. I was never greeted even after standing in front of the reception window nor were the nurse friendly. I was ignored until I initiated the conversation. During that conversation, one of the nurses gave me a hard time due to not having a referral from Dr. Armours office. I stepped aside to call the office to request a referral and left the fax number for Dr. Pompas office. When I finished the call to return to the original nurse, she pointed to another nurse and said “she’ll help you” and then left for lunch. The next nurse I was assisted by wasn’t as friendly either but she did try to put on a friendly front. As I waited to be called to the back, a different nurse came out the door and gestured with her hand for me to come back. Once in the room, I barely spoke with the nurse. After she took vitals, a lady doing student residency came in to speak with me. She was the only person I talked to the most throughout the entire visit and the friendliest. After she left the room, Dr. Pompa entered. Dr. Pompa entered, said who she was and shook my hand. She did not ask the story of why I was there, how it happened, etc. She said she got information from the woman doing her residency (which was not a lot to go off of). She then pressured me into urgently scheduling for chemotherapy and immunotherapy, going for genetic testing, and seeing a fertility specialist to freeze my eggs. Please keep in mind that I have not received an MRI or PET/CAT scan to even see if the cancer is present in my breast (outside of tumor since its removal) nor if anything else was present elsewhere. She continued to insist and I told her “no”. I was open to getting information just in case but as far as jumping into treatment etc. without covering all the basis and being pressured to do so without being able to voice my concerns/opinions, while also receiving invalidation was absolutely egregious. Dr. Pompa told me that due to the type of cancer this treatment was the only way to go. Once I proceeded to ask her about her knowledge about how chemo attacks cancer and other cells. I also asked about its affect on reproduction. She said that the wait after treatment is 2yrs to try to conceive and there’s no guaranteed that I would be able to because many patients do not get the menstrual cycle back. She then ,again, said I should consider freezing my eggs and speaking with a fertility specialist. I would also like to add that I suffer from anemia due to iron deficiency and Dr. Pompa told me I’m not anemic because my hemoglobin levels was normal which again invalidated me, my health, etc. As a doctor, she should know that anemia can stem from other instances. This only added to how I was feeling about her and the facility. As a woman who is in tune with all parts of herself including her health, if something doesn’t feel right or necessary, I will not proceed with it. I am also a college student who enjoys researching topics even outside of my major. That includes the history of Big Pharma, outdated practices and textbooks, as well as experimentation and prejudice against women but especially women of color. This is extremely dangerous and why it is important to know yourself and the facts so that you may properly advocate for yourself. It will also help you avoid risky, sketchy, and even potentially traumatic situations.
