See All ReviewsMy recent visit to Elm City Caffe was, unfortunately, one of the most unacceptable dining experiences I have had. To begin with the positives: the space itself is beautifully designed. The ambiance, decor, and overall aesthetic are thoughtfully curated, and the environment appears clean and well maintained. The pricing of the food initially seemed reasonable. However, presentation and aesthetics cannot compensate for fundamental failures in food safety and service. The food was objectively unacceptable. My friend was served a chicken sandwich containing visibly raw chicken in the center — not slightly undercooked, but raw. Serving undercooked poultry is not a minor oversight; it is a serious public health risk. This is not a matter of preference or taste — it is a basic food safety violation. Since leaving the restaurant, my friend has been ill, which makes the situation even more concerning. In addition, my own meal was poorly executed. My toast was soggy, and although the sausage I ordered was eventually brought out, it was initially forgotten due to the server not paying adequate attention while taking the order. This reflects a lack of attentiveness that should not occur in a professional dining environment. The service compounded these issues. Our server, Jennifer, was unwelcoming and dismissive throughout the interaction. Her tone and nonverbal communication conveyed impatience and condescension. At one point, she asked me if my lips “hurt” — an unsolicited and inappropriate comment, particularly in a professional dining setting. The remark was unnecessary and uncomfortable. Although she attempted to retract the statement, the lack of professionalism was already evident. While the restaurant ultimately chose not to charge us due to the raw chicken, waiving a bill does not rectify a breach in food safety standards or excuse poor service conduct. Allowing guests to leave without payment does not undo the risk posed by serving raw poultry. Dining out frequently has given me a broad range of experiences to compare against, and this was among the worst. A restaurant can recover from minor mistakes; it cannot excuse compromised food safety and unprofessional behavior. I cannot in good conscience return or recommend this establishment. Food safety and professionalism are not luxuries in hospitality — they are the baseline expectation. This experience fell far below that standard.
Elm city cafe is the cutest spot nestled between Stuart and Jensen. Their chicken sandwich and BLT are unbeatable. Have not found a better lunch option in the area. Staff is super friendly, the cafe itself is clean and parking is easy!
