Wow. Where do I even start. This used to be one of my favorite spots near the Medical Center area in San Antonio, so naturally I thought, “Why not a spontaneous lunch?” Bold of me. The experience began with a lovely mystery MUGGY OLD CARPET odor greeting us at the door—really setting the tone for what’s to come. We were seated in the front corner, where I had the privilege of sitting in a lopsided chair that felt like it had seen better decades. The wallpaper? Let’s just say it’s hanging on emotionally and physically—cracked and dry like it’s begging for retirement. A good ol' wipe down may even help it's appearance as the droplets of old food or fluid was extremely noticeable. But the real highlight? Oh, they had entertainment. A live roach made his grand entrance on the wall, casually strolling by as if he was part of the waitstaff's salutations! Honestly, it's confidence was quite fearless and impressive as it perused up and down the old and outdated wallpaper with such finesse. Video included... You're welcome! Now, onto the food… if we’re calling it that. The chicken was small and burnt to the point where the crust could double as a jaw workout, yet somehow the inside managed to be dry and weirdly slimy underneath the crust at the same time. A true culinary paradox! The flavor? Slightly sour, suspiciously off, and definitely not what “fresh” is supposed to taste like. It gave a strong “this was a last chance effort” energy. The egg roll joined the theme—also burnt, dry with a hard oily crust, because consistency matters. The rice? Let's not talk about it. They provided one tiny cup of lemon chicken sauce for a plate that was crying out for hydration help. I had to ask for a second and third cup of lemon sauce just to get through a few bites, which, in hindsight, was probably very optimistic of me. To be fair, the waitress was very kind and attentive—truly the only part of this experience that felt human. As for the $9 specials… sure, it sounds like a deal but I was concerned that my encounter with a slimy and sour piece of chicken would land me at my local Urgent Care. I decided not to roll those dice—I stopped eating as my health is priceless so I paid for my SLOP and left. It's been 8 hours since this low-grade, lurid and leathery lunch so I presume my chances of getting food poisoning have surpassed... whewww!! (Insert sigh of relief) Needless to say, I will not take those chances again...therefore, I will not be returning to Golden Kirin in THIS lifetime or the next!
I’ve tried their lunch specials a couple of times, and it’s quickly become one of my go to spots for an affordable and satisfying meal. The portions are generous, the flavors are solid, and the prices are hard to beat. If you’re looking for great value without sacrificing taste, Golden Kirin is definitely worth checking out.
It’s been a long time since I’ve been to this establishment. Is Golden Kirin under new management/new cook ? I came to eat here about 3 weeks ago and ordered the beef and mushrooms dinner special that comes with fried rice. The food was ok and the fried rice has a different texture from back in the day. I decided to try their lunch special today and ordered the lemon chicken with fried rice. The chicken did not have a flavorful taste. I only ate half my food. I am so disappointed that the quality of food is not the same. The one plus is that my waiter was very attentive and friendly.
