3 months agoMoving reviews over from Yelp and this one is from 2017: Realistically, this is probably a 4-star place but it is such an out of place find in the middle of small town Illinois that I subjectively upgraded my review. We found this place completely by accident when flying over to Ohio to visit our daughter at college. The weather changed abruptly and we had to turn around and find somewhere to put it on the ground until the snow moved out of the area. After landing at Crawford County airport we asked the owner of the FBO for a recommendation and he told us about this place. He also recommended their tenderloin sandwich. They are only open during the middle of the day on the weekends so we got lucky on the timing. The wife and I split the tenderloin and their special of the day which was a cup of chili and a grilled cheese sandwich. It was a late lunch and the smell of the tenderloin cooking damn near killed me while we were waiting for lunch to arrive. When it did, we knew in an instant that we had made a good choice when we took the recommendation to visit this restaurant. The tenderloin was very clearly hand cut, pounded flat and hand-breaded before going for a swim in the fryer. It was absolutely perfect! Crunchy outside, tender and juicy on the inside. The thickness was exactly right such that the breading and meat were properly proportioned and balanced. Most definitely one of the very best pork tenderloin sandwiches I've ever had. The chili was mild but delicious. Thick, meaty and flavorful are probably the best way to describe the experience. The grilled cheese? Pretty much straight out of your grandma's kitchen circa 1975, if you're about my age. Like everything in the place, dessert was also made from scratch. The matron of the family that owns the place makes all of their pies and very clearly doesn't cut corners.

6 years agoI love the Hitchin Post! The restaurant has an old West feel. The food is always good. And the pies are amazing, especially the Spanish cream pie!

8 years agoI've had only two dishes here. The horseshoe which I wasn't super impressed with and the country fried steak which I enjoyed a lot. I've only dined in once, we got there early and we had to wait to be served because they were understaffed on the floor. Service was still good after that though. The second time the meal was to go for a business meeting.

Edited 8 years agoFast service, Great staff. Food was salty. My husband and I both ordered the beef Manhatten the meat tasted like it came out of A can the gravy was runny and very salty was more juice with alot of added salt than A gravy. The mashed potatoes were instant and salty as well. Now my husband is A salt aholic loves alot of salt on everything but when he said it was salty it's salty. Me I had A bad cold and couldn't taste much but salt. Made my legs swell bad. We also ordered sweet tea and it was undrinkable not sure what brand they were using but it had an almost metallic taste and tea is all I ever drink so for me too not drink it it was nasty. The waitress we had was awesome, very polite and friendly. We we're the only people in the restaurant and it was about 4 pm so we got undivided attention. The price of the food was expensive for two beef Manhatten A small side salad and A small cottage cheese plus two sweet teas it was just shy of $30… now I could of went and had A nice fillet mignon baked potato and salad bar for $20 each with Sweet teas. Sure won't be going back here again for the expensive and salty food.
