Iguana Restaurant has become one of our favorite stops in Nuevo Progreso. Every time my wife and I cross over, we make it a point to eat here because the food is always that good. Their bistec tacos are some of the best in the area, plain and simple. The meat is flavorful, the tortillas are perfect, and everything tastes fresh and made with care. Their lonches are also excellent and exactly the kind of food you hope to find when you cross over for a good meal. It is simple, delicious, satisfying food done right. You also have to get a plate of chiles toreados. They char them on the grill, salt them, and they are always wonderful, flavorful, and SPICY. They are the perfect side to go with the tacos and lonches, especially if you like a little heat with your meal. The staff are always incredibly nice and welcoming, which makes the place even better. They are also very relaxed about letting you bring in outside drinks as long as you are buying food, which is honestly great since they do not serve margaritas. Grab your drinks, sit down, order tacos, lonches, and chiles toreados, and enjoy one of the best casual meals in Nuevo Progreso. This is the kind of restaurant that keeps earning your business because the food is consistently great and the people are genuinely kind. We love this place and will keep coming back every time we visit.
My husband said they had the best food out of ALL the restaurants we tried. Hole in the wall- “locals” kind of place. We ate at red snapper, la partones, ponchos (ew), ranch grande, and many many others but this was the best! Legit native Texans- we’ve ate a lot of Mexican food, this tops them all.
