Dumbfounded is what we were when we left after eating here — honestly probably the worst food experience we’ve ever had. The staff was friendly and kind, although the server didn’t seemed very engaged (maybe it was first few days opening issues)… that wasn’t the issue. My husband and I both ordered the fried green tomato BLT. When we got it the cook (she was super sweet) said she had ran out of bacon and could only put one piece of bacon on each sandwich! What??? There were two thick slices of Texas toast with one mushy fried green tomato, a very thin layer of mayonnaise and ONE piece of bacon on a $14 BLT! We were stunned! The collards were really good but the hash brown casserole was obviously warmed up, dry and didn’t taste great. We left it uneaten. When they asked what we thought we were honest. They apologized, saying it was their first week open. The cook said she was about to fry some more bacon and they could give us more bacon (this after we were finished and ready to go). We certainly weren’t looking for favors but even knowing we were unimpressed and obviously received less bacon than we should have there was no offer of a discount, or even a “gosh I’m so sorry”. We eat out a lot and truly this experience left us bewildered for the rest of the day. It’s been at least four weeks since our visit and we still talk about what a strange experience it was. I hope by now they’ve worked out the kinks but we won’t be going back to find out for ourselves.
The employees were definitely not the problem — everyone we interacted with was great. The issue was the food quality compared to the price you pay. We ordered quite a bit because my husband couldn’t decide what he wanted, and unfortunately almost everything came out barely warm. The only thing that was actually hot was the hash brown casserole, and that seemed to be because it had been microwaved beforehand. Our gravy biscuit, fried green tomatoes, and both chicken biscuits were all far from warm. For the cost, we expected much better.
I went to lunch with a friend and tried this place out. They need to update their sign since it says "Shake and Dog" outside. Most seating is for 4, but 2 tables near the window are for two people. But there were tons of flies around those seats (need to get some sort of pest control), so I relocated to one of the four seaters. I ordered the BBQ pork plate with potato salad and slaw. Soda was by the can and was $3. The plate was $14, and I was hoping for a decent amount of food. What I received was disappointing. On the plate was a serving spoon of potato salad and slaw and maybe one and a half serving spoons of pork. And a piece of cornbread. Honestly, the only thing that was decent was the cornbread. The pork was burned like it had been sitting in the bottom of a crock pot for too long. Also, the slaw and the potato salad didn't seem homemade or original (like you would get from Sysco). The other scary thing was that one of the employees (chef?) had food service gloves on but walked outside with the gloves and used her gloved hands to open and close the door. Sorry, you need to discard or change your gloves when you leave/renter the kitchen area (my wife worked in foodservice). And you certainly shouldn't be touching things other than food. My friend had the burger and she had no complaints, but I won't be back.
