Not sure what’s going on here. We walked over from Woodward Avenue because we hoped to see at least a glimpse of the old theater, but the whole building seems to be closed up. We walked around the exterior and found scaffolding and construction fences the whole way round. No entrance was apparent for cars or pedestrians. We didn’t see any sign indicating whether the barriers are for reconstruction work (I hope so) or just to protect people as the building slowly collapses… I’m glad other people could go in earlier and took pictures. I found one bit of exposed fancy woodwork visible through the fence—photo attached.
This is one of the most interesting spaces in the country! Located in downtown Detroit. The 4,038-seat Michigan Theatre was designed in the French Renaissance style in 1925 and was simply unrivaled in Detroit in elegance at the time. It was converted into a parking garage with much of the ceilings still in tact. It has been used as a location for films, most notably 8 Mile.
The old theater that's being used as parking lot now. There was a workshop where Henry Ford made his first cars. Since the building is half-abandonded and run down, usually you can't enter the theater when there isn't any special event. Still, you can enter the parking lot part and see some part of the nice interior decoration of the building.
