Unfriendly owner followed my girlfriend and I around the store, which is dirty, dusty, and cramped, presumably because he assumed we were going to steal. My girlfriend was interested in a jewelry box but she put it down because the markup was ridiculous ($60 for a jewelry box) then when leaving he harassed us asking where the box was. I retrieved it for him and left immediately. Incredibly uncomfortable experience when the owner follows you through the entire store. Plenty of better places to go in lambertville, don’t bother with the rude and unfriendly owner.
I went here today as a 26 year old woman with my 66 year old father. I just bought my first apartment in a tough economy and have been looking for some nice things to hang up. I have an appreciation for older pieces and art history, and I found two things I liked as they were based around where I just moved. They were very clearly over-priced (one being $150, the other $300), for two possible prints, sketches at best, with dirty frames. However, I just got my first promotion and wanted to treat myself to something “pricey”. The man at the front, Peter, told us most art was half off today. I wanted to come back after lunch for them. I should’ve listened to my Father when we left to not go back, but my excitement got the best of me. So much so, that I even called Peter on the walk back, to see if his store was still open so I could come for the art. He said he’d wait for me and obviously realized I was a legit customer. When I came to the register with the pieces, he reiterated they’d be half off. He then said that the $300 picture belonged to a pair. I did not see this marked on the tag and did not realize that the piece similar to it was mandatory to get with it. Although clearly from the same artist, they were different with different color stories. So I asked very nicely if I could have just the one since I loved the color. He said yes, that it would be $150. Both pieces should have come out to around $140 being half off, so when he rang me up for $300 I was confused. He was fiddling around nervously with his calculator and tried to take the price tags off before telling me the total. So I mentioned my confusion, and he said “this one is $150.” I said I knew, but that he stated the art was half off. He then proceeded to literally snatch both pieces out of my hands, followed by barking at me “These aren’t for you. The stores closed.” I asked if he was serious, to which he replied “You have no appreciation. You’ll learn when you’re older.” I was truly shocked by this. I called over to my Dad to see if he heard what was happening. I asked “can you believe the way he’s treating me?.” Peter told me that it’s not him, that I’m “just plain stupid and can’t add!” The true sincerity in his voice and demeanor made me feel like the scum on the bottom of someone’s shoes. Another customer overheard, and said that he “better be a friend to be talking to me that way.” I left with tears in my eyes and cried the whole hour back home. I realize I am not the wealthiest person on Earth, and boy did I feel the part after that. He tried to scam me, period. And I asked gently for clarification. I am a very patient and humble girl, who does not ask for trouble and truly took the time out of my day to take in his pieces and wanted to commit to a sale. I’ve never been made to feel so pathetic and embarrassed by a store employee in my entire life. This is the first bad review I’ve EVER written. DO NOT buy from this miserable, terrible excuse of a man. If he thinks I’m so young, that’s one hell of a way to treat a young woman.
Noteworthy antique shop. 3 floors packed shoulder to shoulder with everything you could imagine. Really brilliant and photogenic, but very cramped (imagine a neighborhood of only one-way streets). Owner is in my experience, is a gentleman. He's easy to chat with and make a deal with. Def worth a visit if you're in Lambertville or New Hope. Just be prepared how packed and overwhelming it can be.
