I've never tried Sri Lankan food before, so I can't speak to the its authenticity, but it was delicious! I had coconut roti with (yellow) dahl - the roti was chewy and freshly made, and the dahl was very savory and a little spicy. My meal companions had several of the savory buns/pastries, and the fish pastry was best, but they were all good. The proprietor was very friendly, answered our questions, and gave us free samples of some other dishes - one was like a chicken stir fry with pieces of rotti instead of rice, and a coconut flan-like dessert. The grocery in the back is fun to check out while you wait for your food too ☺️
Thunapaha Restaurant & Grocery on Jones Rd is a true hidden gem! The food here is absolutely delicious — rich flavors, authentic dishes, and generous portions that taste just like home-cooked Sri Lankan meals. Every plate feels fresh, comforting, and full of real spices and aroma. The grocery section is also fantastic. They have a huge variety of Sri Lankan and South Asian ingredients, snacks, spices, and essentials that are hard to find anywhere else in Houston. It’s so convenient to enjoy a great meal and also take home groceries in one stop. The staff is friendly, the atmosphere is welcoming, and the overall experience is always excellent. If you’re craving flavorful food and a well-stocked grocery selection, this place definitely deserves 5 stars!
Went here to give Sri Lankan food another chance since there’s only two Sri Lanka restaurants in Houston metroplex. Went to Lanka-Mex literally across the city very bad . I went here , good Sri Lankan food . First time trying Sri Lankan pastry super super delicious will come back to buy a lot of those sweet pastry. If you like me trying different food culture since Houston rated top diversity in the country ,this is the spot to try good Sri Lankan food.
