Mediocre Cuban food and overpriced. While my fish was good, the rice wasn't cooked all the way and the tostones were made from yellow plantains which is a big no-no. Nobody likes sweet tostones! They charged extra for a cup of not so tasty black beans. So $26 for a snapper filet, small amount of rice and beans and three tostones cooked wrong. This definitely doesn't compete with other Cuban restaurants in Tampa, such as La Teresita. Decor was nice and service was good, just not enough to bring me back.
We have been wanting to try this place for a while and finally had the opportunity to go last night . From the moment we walked in we felt like we were the most important people in the restaurant . We had made reservations via open table and as soon as we said the last name they were like oh yes! Right this way and stopped to let a lady know we arrived which later turned out to be the owner . Our table was a nice booth in the corner of the restaurant . From the moment we sat down our waitress made us feel like family ! Everyone referred to her as mami. She made jokes , told us her favorites on the menu and truly laughed with us the whole night . The food arrived and everything tasted amazing , there was a little hiccup with one of the churrascos (our table ordered 3 total) and one of them came looking like it was a left over piece from one of the other steaks it was tiny ! However we barely mentioned it and immediately the chef came out and and apologized and brought a much larger fresh one in addition to the small one at no extra charge ! He actually pulled up a seat at our table and began to briefly talk to us and we actually had a great conversation . We then mentioned about interest in catering for our wedding and so they let us eat and when the dessert came one of the owners sat down with us and talked to us all about our wedding while we enjoyed dessert (FYI you must have the tres leches there!!) . Anyway the place is mom and pop owned by the young lady we sat with , her husband and parents . It’s an incredibly warm atmosphere and she even had both her small children there with her . She was so amazing about everything and gave us some honest advice in our wedding . Her husband even briefly came to speak with us and we attempted to play a funny prank on the chef . They made us laugh so much and kept us so entertained and made us feel so welcome that we left there wanting to make this our new “go to place” even joking to call and request they always give us the same booth and waitress . We left there so happy and are really looking forward to trying to collaborate with them for our wedding . (They are just starting to wet their feet in catering ) but hands down would recommend this place a million times over for anyone looking for south Florida style Cuban food in the area . If you have ever been to their location in Mallory Square, Key West, then you will understand the amazing, outstanding quality and overall experience La Yuma provides. I'm virtually speachless. You have to try it for yourselves...today!!!
