See All ReviewsHands down, best meal I’ve had in a long time. Had my man try soul food for the first time and his eyes rolled back. Definitely coming back over and over again soon!
The ghost pepper wings at Lil Kessie’s are absolutely 🔥 — packed with bold flavor and the perfect kick! The greens are so delicious you don’t even need to add extra hot sauce. And last but definitely not least, the yams have the best touch of sweetness. Everything was seasoned just right — can’t wait to come back for more!
What's the difference between New Orleans creole food vs soul food (in Houston)? The Houston soul food is way better! In particular, what we had here trumped any restaurants that we had tried (big or small) in New Orleans - sorry, just our honest thoughts after trying the oxtails and the fried fish with étouffée. The portion size was indeed perfectly large, so we were truly pleasantly surprised. The gentleman in charge not only was kind, friendly, and helpful, he also very thoughtfully packed the two fried fish fillets separately away from the étouffée, so they don't get soggy. The crunch from the fried fish and the spice level were perfect! No lemon needed. They tasted amazing with or without the étouffée! My son had never had soul food before, and had never tried oxtails anywhere. He was so happy with everything that was in front of him! The oxtails (albeit had small tough spots) were falling off the bone and perfectly fatty and meaty. I lean towards salty food, so I personally would add more salt to the gravy. However, this one had so much umami flavor, and they did include salt and pepper packets in the to-go bag. The corn bread was also soft and moist. My son said the Mac and cheese was also super yummy. They are pricy, and they do charge a fee if you cannot pay cash. Nonetheless, it is a great treat, and there are plenty of places where they'd charge more for less. This is the best place if you want some delicious, well-balanced, yet comfort food that would totally fill you up for a day or two. PS. They graciously gave us some Mardi Gras wrist bands!
