Hands down, best meal I’ve had in a long time. Had my man try soul food for the first time and his eyes rolled back. Definitely coming back over and over again soon!
The ghost pepper wings at Lil Kessie’s are absolutely 🔥 — packed with bold flavor and the perfect kick! The greens are so delicious you don’t even need to add extra hot sauce. And last but definitely not least, the yams have the best touch of sweetness. Everything was seasoned just right — can’t wait to come back for more!
What's the difference between New Orleans creole food vs soul food (in Houston)? The Houston soul food is way better! In particular, what we had here trumped any restaurants that we had tried (big or small) in New Orleans - sorry, just our honest thoughts after trying the oxtails and the fried fish with étouffée. The portion size was indeed perfectly large, so we were truly pleasantly surprised. The gentleman in charge not only was kind, friendly, and helpful, he also very thoughtfully packed the two fried fish fillets separately away from the étouffée, so they don't get soggy. The crunch from the fried fish and the spice level were perfect! No lemon needed. They tasted amazing with or without the étouffée! My son had never had soul food before, and had never tried oxtails anywhere. He was so happy with everything that was in front of him! The oxtails (albeit had small tough spots) were falling off the bone and perfectly fatty and meaty. I lean towards salty food, so I personally would add more salt to the gravy. However, this one had so much umami flavor, and they did include salt and pepper packets in the to-go bag. The corn bread was also soft and moist. My son said the Mac and cheese was also super yummy. They are pricy, and they do charge a fee if you cannot pay cash. Nonetheless, it is a great treat, and there are plenty of places where they'd charge more for less. This is the best place if you want some delicious, well-balanced, yet comfort food that would totally fill you up for a day or two. PS. They graciously gave us some Mardi Gras wrist bands!
I had to drive a ways from home just to get a little taste of home. My family and I visited Lil Kessie's Mobile Kitchen during our recent visit to Texas and got several Louisiana Cuisines. Everything was incredible. We started off with the Chicken and Sausage Okra over a bed of rice, which was delicious and flavorful. My daughter ordered the Fried Chicken Wing plate. She absolutely enjoyed every bit of it. My husband and I got the Pork Steak Sandwiches and they did not disappoint. They were very tender and flavorful as well. Lil Kessie's never misses. The food was definitely fantastic but what stands out equally as much is the customer service. The quality of service and the atmosphere is top notch and Shawn (the owner) has a way of making EVERYBODY feel like family. If you are ever in Katy, TX and looking for a home cook meal that has that signature Louisiana flavor and stellar hospitality, then this is the spot.
Ok first off we loved the customer service. Had us laughing, because I kept saying what I didn't want on my burger. We just did a "soul food Google search" and so glad we did. I had burger/lemon pepper wings...was 🔥🔥🔥. The flavor in that burger was awesome, now it was too spicy for me, but my husband loved it...he got catfish/etouffee/greens.... again 🔥🔥🔥...we will definitely be back. Oh lemon pepper wings cooked just how I like them...
I can really comment on the atmosphere because it is a mobile truck. HOWEVER, I can definitely comment on the food. I've only visited twice, which prompted me to go back a second time just to make sure it wasnt a one off thing and the food was really good. When I tell you the food is really good, I am not kidding. The first time I went I purchased the Oxtails dinner with collards and Mac n Cheese. The Oxtails literally melted in my mouth. Generally, I have a problem with anyone else's Oxtails because I find they aren't cooked long enough, therefore not tender. But Lil Kessie (whoever she is) knows her Oxtails. The next time I went was because I was craving BBQ. I'm a replant from Seattle and have been here since 2013. I've visited many BBQ joints here but have yet to find that one that keeps you coming back. Anyway, I went to Lil Kessies for some BBQ brisket but they didnt have it so I settled for the sausage dinner. I ordered the beef sausage which came with rice dressing aka dirty rice, yams, Mac n Cheese. I wasn't really into the sausage (it just wasn't my type of sausage, not bad or good, just okay). But those YAMS!!! I didnt even get to savor them at its fullest because they were so darn good that the moment I put them in my mouth they disappeared. The favor, the sweetness, the tenderness was amazing. Something my gma would make. You know some sweet potatoes/yams can be stringy but these were on point. And of course I had to experience the Mac n Cheese again to make sure they weren't a fluke and they weren't. I just hate there was a misconnect on my ordering the collards. I wanted to try them again to make sure they were as tender as I remembered them to be, because y'all know SOUL FOOD cooked right feeds the soul. If you are ever in the Katy area, drop by Lil Kessie's and check them out. I don't think you will be disappointed. And like I said, SOUL FOOD COOKED RIGHT FEEDS THE SOUL. Thank you Lil Kessie, whoever and wherever you are, for pouring out your soul into your food.
My first time trying Texas Creole soul food and it was great! I had the Creole Seafood Okra dinner with a side of chicken wings and my girlfriend got the pork steak dinner plate. The food has a lot of flavor! We especially liked the fried chicken wings and pork steak. Lastly, the friendlyness of Lil Kessie and his associate were awesome. It made the experience for us that much better. Come pay them a visit when you're hungry, as they also provide large portions.
We ordered the oxtails, mac & cheese, greens bowl, crawfish étouffée, cornbread and a homemade hot link. The food was surprisingly good. They have some of the best crawfish étouffée I’ve ever had Pretty damn good to be from Lafayette lol. The oxtail plate came with three large meaty, oxtails over a bet of rice and gravy. Mac and cheese was avg. Green were perfectly seasoned not over cooked. Hotline was also very good. texture is soft like Pattersons i bet it would taste great on a poor boy. I definitely recommend the work continue to support
