Wei Wei palace Chinese BBQ restaurant. Highly recommended
I’ve been here several times, and while the food is generally decent, the service is always bad—and this time it was worse than usual. Today, I wasn’t very hungry but wanted a few appetizers, so I ordered four items totaling more than $15. I told them I was good for now and didn’t want to order anything else—at least until the food came out. I was told there’s a $15 minimum for dine-in service, which I understood and decided to take my order to go instead. However, the server said it was too late to switch because my water had already been poured into a red solo cup. I accepted that and made it clear I wouldn’t be ordering anything further. We also asked for chili oil but never received it—maybe I need to spend $30 for extras like that? The server kept trying to get me to buy more, even though I knew my order was over $15. When the bill came, it was $21. I asked about the $15 minimum charge she mentioned earlier, and she said it was okay but had previously suggested my order was under $15. Spending more money wasn’t the issue—I just wish she had been honest about the situation. I had planned to order more food to take home for dinner but decided against it after this experience.
My wife and I went there this evening and were pleasantly surprised! We had the Red Dates Chicken feet, the Braised Tofu with Black Mushroom and Snow Peas (a.k.a. Hong Suey Tofu), and Eggplant in Special Sauce. Hong Suey tofu - very good fragrant flavor, crunchy peas, tofu well fried, mushrooms are fresh. Sauce is tasty with a slight garlicky flavor. Eggplant - slightly seared and very nice texture. Firm and succulent. The sauce has a nice flavor with a hint of Chinese 5-spice powder, and a slight tangy tinge...almost orange, slightly sweet, slightly salty. Great balance of taste! The chicken feet were very well prepared. It was tasty and fragrant. Not too sweet, neither too salty. The meat was nice and cooked. The marinate was very pleasant to the palate. It certainly is better than the quality we had gotten from several different restaurants in Chicago's Chinatown and Chinatown Square.
